World production predicted to grow 15% to 142m bags in 2007/08

World coffee production will grow to 141.87m bags in the 2007/08 crop year, Fortis Bank predicted in late March, a 15% rise on the previous year’s123m bag crop, a Dow Jones report said.Most of the increase is the result of an increase in arabica production this season, Fortis said, especially in Brazil, bringing the total up to 90.84m bags. Robusta will rise to 51.03m bags, mostly from Vietnam, the bank added.
Fortis also increased its prediction for the current season’s consumption to 126.2m bags, but said that the 2007/08 global surplus would be up to 15.57m bags.
